This is going to be a long post, let's get this out of the way first.
Not boots, not by a long shot. If you say, "close enough" or "what's the difference?" you probably don't belong here(and you sound a little like my wife). I think that "our friend" at The Daily Mail outed himself by going out of the way to point out that these AREN'T boots.
Ages ago, I created a photo essay that discussed the "are those even boots?" problem. In it I wrote about stocking boots and peep-toe boots and thigh-high gladiator sandals. I concluded that if you had to spend much time or effort deciding if footwear was or wasn't boots, it probably didn't matter. Our fondness for the world's most glorious fashion accessory/necessity comes from a place before words. We like them or we don't and if we have to analyze it, the moment has passed.
That brings us to matte on matte and Miranda Lambert at the CMA's. For months I have been cautioning that the light absorbing properties of suede (black in particular) is the material's greatest drawback. In most situations suede is visually similar to fabric of the same shade.
After considerable study I have concluded that Miss Lambert was indeed wearing thigh high boots at the CMA's. Using only video evidence my respected friend and colleague Dr Morgus reached a different conclusion and I completely understand why. It took me quite a while to sort out the partial inside zip and outer lacing(the white dots at her ankle are actually her flesh under the hem of her pants showing through the side lacing of the boots).

(This youtube clip is only so-so and I don't think it will be around long)
Sure they're great boots and would have looked great if they hadn't so closely matched her pants. On a naked leg or over faded jeans this would have been a home run, but with matching pants......Compare this with Reba's boots. It takes less than a second to see that Reba is wearing a pair of black leather over the knee boots.

(this is a different version than the one Dr. M provided yesterday. It's the full performance and is a lower resolution, but might be a little clearer. If you like these boots you should download both and decide which YOU prefer)
Admittedly, for a purist, neither boot will really measure up. Heel-heads will almost certainly side with the spiky suede. I don't like the mono-chrome look and have a bias for contrasting boots/pants, so my judgment is suspect.
Anyway, I've really lost interest in writing this post and can't come up with a meaningful conclusion. So how about this......Look they're wearing BOOTS!
It's funny, we happened to switch to the CMAs (by mistake, quite honestly) and Carrie Underwood was performing. My wife said, "how do those boots stay up!?" and then said, "oh, I guess those aren't boots." ... I think she gets it too! Which is nice.
ReplyDeleteThat is nice. In the same situation I know I would hear, "what's the difference."
DeleteHmmmm. Based upon the evidence laid out by the defense the state has no choice but to overturn the decision. I stand corrected. Well done Mr Perry Mason well done.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand your original opinion. I spent quite a while studying stills and going through video frame by frame. The white dots confused the hell out of me until the eureka moment when I realized the hem/ankle hypotheses. Then everything fell into place. And by that time I had completely lost interest in what Miranda Lambert wore at the CMA's.
DeleteThey appear to be under stretch pants to me.
