The great prognosticator is stumped

Summer is about to give way to fall. For about the last 20 years I've issued grandiose and deeply spurious predictions about the upcoming boot season. Right or wrong (usually wrong) I've had a strong, possibly delusional sense of what the next 6 months might hold. This year I got nothing.  Fabric thighboots might continue to be inexplicably popular. The leather, knee-scraping, scrunch boot might be the boot of the year. Some particularly repellent form of the ankle shoe might grab the spotlight. I have no idea. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

  1. My prediction is a move towards slouchies. There's been a number of pull on boots that are cut a bit wider in the shaft on the catwalks. I'll be suffering as I always have the urge to pull the boots up to their full length!

  2. Well, are we taking celebrities or the general public? And I’ll limit my prognosis to anything that reaches to the knee or above. So here goes... it seems that the general public here in Northern California has lost interest. At most you’ll see a pair of flat suedies (or fabric) and I don’t think that will change much this fall. This stuff goes in cycles and right now is a down cycle. Give it a few years.

Celebrities is a different thing... it seems they are running out of ideas and are experimenting with some weird stuff, especially for us purists that grew up in the 70s or 80s. Sure, there’ll be some bright moments... if you check out what’s available at Luisaviaroma, Farfetch, Neiman Marcus or MyTheresa you’ll get a pretty good idea. 10% is brilliant, the rest not so much (of course your mileage may vary). Perhaps we’re in a post fashion trend era where boots are as mainstream and as shoes... anything goes any time with no crystal clear trends. Seasons don’t really exist... Women will wear boots if they feel like it come summer, fall, winter and spring. Not such a bad thing.

And the amazing thing is that OTKs and thigh highs availability has gone from a bit of a rare curiosity with limited availability in the 90s and 00s to completely mainstream nowadays (or is that just me getting tricked due to the rise of the worldwide web?). No more looking for a pair of crotch highs at local Wild Pair shop or some fetish shop. For the last 10-15 years we’ve been able to acquire an awesome pair oftentimes made in Italy from at least 10 or 20 high fashion brands. And mid cost retailers too (Aldo’s, Stuart Weitzman and Tamara Mellon to name a few). Good times indeed... just not certain who buys them, certainly rarely see any such thing here in NorCal.

    That much for a prognosis...
