A Mexican movie from 1946 tells the supposedly true story of Catalina de Erauso, the Lieutenant Nun(La Monja Alferez). It's a pretty good tale, with a narrative of rising against confines of the church and social order which would be a good fit for a modern retelling. The period portrait of Catalina makes her tale of passing for a man believable. The timeless beauty of María Félix almost turns it into a farce. This is neither the first nor last time I will point out how unlikely it is that someone would mistake a screen beauty for a man. I LOVE the costuming in this. Too bad it's in black and white and that she often wears tights and thigh boots that are the same shade (esp the black on black). But watching this gave me a little crush on María who mixes the appeal of both Rosalind and Jane Russell.
PS, in these movies, why is it that the woman masquerading as a man is ALWAYS irresistible to other women? This is yet another in a long line of movies that features a woman throwing herself upon the trousered femme.
