Prime(?) Bootage

Thankfully, NBC remade the iconic BBC cop show Prime Suspect in 2011. Only during the golden age would they have dressed a detective is any sort of decent boots.  And I use the word "decent" advisedly. The show was never as good as this poster teases.

Maria Bello boots it up in Prime Suspect s01e13. Since I'm clearly feeling chatty this morning here are two observations. One boot related, one not-

As I type this,  Despierta America is in the middle of boot-fest, there are three pairs (one OTK) on Home & Family and I wouldn't be surprised if Natalie Morales is wearing her suede thigh boots again. I only have one fear regarding "The Platinum Age."  The golden age was highlighted by a look (knee or OTK boots worn over pants) that wasn't terribly risky and translated well to real life.  On any cold-weather trip to the supermarket I still see multiple pairs of riders over jeans/leggings. It's become the no-brainer way to dress up an outfit in under 3 seconds.  It certainly wasn't this way 7 years ago.
Platinum Age bootage seems riskier and more demanding.  When I go to Target later today, I'm probably not going to see anybody in a short skirt, let alone paired with thigh boots.  My fear is that unlike golden age bootage, the current trend might not make the jump from The Screen to The Street.
That being said, there is evidence that the current boot trend has encouraged women to continue wearing their high boots from 3 years ago, rather than ditching them for horrid little circa-2014 ankle shoes. That is unreservedly good news.

Now, about Prime Suspect. You may recall that when the original debuted in 1991 there was much discussion about casting the "mature" 45 year-old Helen Mirren as the lead in a police procedural.  "Groundbreaking" was an often heard phrase.  I didn't hear a single word about Maria Bello's age in the discussion of the remake-she was 44 at the time.  A lot has changed in our perception of age in the last 25 years.

  1. I was at Trader Joe's yesterday and there was a younger woman there, maybe late 20's-early 30's wearing a pair of black leather thigh boots, with a few inches of bare skin showing between the tops and the hem of her skirt. And they had heels. The heels weren't stiletto, but they were unique. They were squarish gold metal frames, hollow inside, perhaps 2.5". She was casually shopping with her son and husband. You don't see that every day.

  2. I'll correct that. Her heels were more like 1.5" or 2", not high at all, but blessedly her boots did have heels, and very eye-catching ones at that.
