From How To Murder Your Wife (1965). In this Jack Lemmon comedy, Virna Lisi wears a remarkable (for the time-period) pair of tight-to-the-leg, high-heeled, side-zip, black leather knee boots over a pair of black stretch pants. I cannot think of a single historical precedent for this look. For a boot from 1965, those are practically sky-scraper heels. The typical fashion boot of the era (esp a pair worn over pants) would have been mid-calf with a very low heel. I'm sending my findings to renowned boot historian AndyP1966 to see if he can offer any insight.
Exceptional boots for this time period.
ReplyDeleteThese are quite unusual… I've seen boots from this period that were as high-legged as these, but nowhere near as tight; the shaft is more typical of a pair from the late 60s or early 70s. If the leg was straighter than it might look like some of the pairs worn by Nancy Sinatra in the post "Boots" era, but even those are two or three years later than these. I'll dig around and see if I can turn up anything like this in publications from the period. Another exceptional clip - thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe easy answer is that the producer wanted the studio to pick up the tab for a new pair of custom boots for his mistress. But I have no idea what the real answer is. In any event, I glad you share my opinion that these are unusual and noteworthy.
