It's either a coincidence or great minds (well, one great mind and mine) thinking alike, but when I went to link to AndyP's boot history blog, I saw that he had just posted a look at the very time period I was referring to. (Please see my previous post) I don't know what the odds are that both of us would post about boots from the same year on the same day(a mere 49 years after the fact). I assure you it was a coincidence.
Andy is a much more serious historian than I and I will always defer to his expertise, but some observations-
In comparing Virna's boots and Nancy's (the two below are the most similar), its difficult to do a direct comparison, since we only have moving images of Virna's black boots. Both boots have a high heel, Nancy's don't appear to have a side-zip and may be an inch or two shorter shafted. Because Virna is wearing them over pants it's difficult to compare the snugness to the leg. I felt that snugness was one of the unique features of those boots.
In any event, I do feel that both posts highlight the moment when, as Andy says, "boots began to acquire the first kitten-heeled, form-fitted
characteristics that made them distinct from their distant progenitor,
the riding boot."
Great minds think alike, I guess :) Thanks as ever for the kind words
