Why The Internet is to Blame

Yesterday I selected a full slate of videos for today's update. I uploaded them to youtube last night and planned to have everything done by mid-morning. Early this morning I couldn't remember if I had uploaded the clips to zippyshare. So, I checked my zippyshare profile and that's when I noticed that the clip for "Elle boit pas...." (the post immediately below), which I uploaded a week ago hadn't gotten a single download. Turns out I had somehow forgotten to post that clip. In getting the info for that post together I did what I often do, search for "[actresses name] boots." Searching for "Mireille Darc boots" let me to the image below-

NOT Mireille Darc
This image led me here.  This is a page from the French blog a propos de bottes, The literal meaning is "on the subject of boots." Thanks to Merriam-Webster I know the phrase is usually "used to change the subject" Which explains this blog. While it is nominally about boots, and the author freely admits to having a boot fetish, it's also about 100 other things. And it's in French and google translate does a poor job on delicate, intricate prose.  I got  excited and it took me almost an hour to discover it's not quite the booted treasure trove I had hoped.

However, as I poked around the blog I found mention of "Sarah Bernhardt in L'Aiglon." You know how much I love women from before the 1960's in over the knee boots. You'll find a handful of pictures if you follow that link. You'll also find this-
NOT Sarah Bernhardt
That's actress Maude Adams (no, the one you're thinking of spells her name without the "e"). I don't think I've ever had a crush on someone born in 1872. I LOVE that picture and can't believe it's 115 years old. So, I spent quite a while learning about L'Aiglon and Maude Adams. Sarah starred in the play in London, while Maude simultaneously played the same role in New York.

Also from a propos de bottes was a mention of a French adult film from 1978 called "LES CUISSARDES" (The Thigh High Boots). I went into search overdrive, found the movie, downloaded it and only as I scanned through it did I remember I'd already seen it and that it contains NO boots whatsoever.  So that was another 20 minutes down the drain.

I don't feel like I wasted 3 and 1/2 hours. It just always surprises me how quickly time can pass. In the blink of an eye, I've got 28 new browser windows open, I'm researching long dead actresses and the book Le masochisme au cinéma (Jean Streff, 1978) and wading through an auto-translated tale of a Frenchman's battle with OCD. And it all started because I searched for Mireille Darc boots. The internet's a funny place.

  2. Sarah mostly starred in "L'Aiglon" in Paris, where the play premiered in 1900 with Sarah in the title role. Note that she was 56 then and played a 19-21 years old man (Napoleon's son). Hard to imagine that she really captured the public.

If you'd like any more info on the play or actors who took the role, just say :)
